Comon names for this crab include Velvet swimming crab, velvet fiddler and devil crab (possibly because of its bright red eyes). Its rear legs are paddle like, making it an efficient swimmer, though it is usually found on or close to a firm surface.

A velvet swimming crab close up, showing its bright red eyes, paddle like rear limbs can just be seen in the background.
